Scenes from Scripture

The Tower of Babel

Brick for stone, a tower toward heaven, and one speech broken into many. Scroll to watch it.

The whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, when they removed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Sin'ar; and they dwelt there. And they said, each man to his fellow, 'Go to, let us cast bricks and burn them with fire.' And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. And they said, 'Go to, let us build us a town and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the earth.'

Genesis 11:1-4, as Zachariah Rhetor gives it

Yet not, as in the case of those who formerly, removing from the east and finding a plain in Senaar, began [to build a tower], is there need for us to bake bricks with fire, and to seek slime for mortar; for their tongues were confounded, and their work was destroyed. But for us the Lord has consecrated a way through His blood, and has made it easy.

Athanasius of Alexandria, Festal Letters XLIII
