Accessibility
Every page should be readable by everyone. Here is what we check, and what we do not.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site has not been independently audited, so this is an aim, not a claim of conformance.
What is tested on every change
- Body text has a contrast ratio of at least 7:1 against every background it sits on, which is WCAG’s stricter AAA level. Secondary text, links and accents are at least 4.5:1.
- Every page opens with a “Skip to content” link as the first thing the Tab key reaches, has one main region and one footer, and skips no heading level.
- No page scrolls sideways at a width of 320, 375 or 1280 pixels, so text reflows on a small phone and when zoomed.
- When your device asks for reduced motion, the animated map of the Fathers draws nothing in and shows its finished state.
- Ask the Forge announces to screen readers that it is working, and moves focus to the answer when it arrives.
What is not yet good enough
- The site’s other animations are written to stop or settle for reduced motion too, but only the map is tested for it.
- Some pages quote Coptic script. How it is read aloud depends on your screen reader and its language settings, and some read it poorly or not at all.
- The question box and the signup form use Cloudflare’s bot check. Occasionally it asks you to prove you are human, and that challenge is Cloudflare’s, not ours.
- An answer from Ask the Forge can take a minute or more to arrive while every quotation is checked. The page tells you it is working, but the wait is real.
