What does it mean for God's characteristics to be unchanging?

God’s characteristics are absolute; He does not increase or decrease, but remains as He is without change. He says in Malachi the prophet, “For I am the Lord, I do not change” (Mal. 3:6). “He first loved us” (1 John 4:19) and His love did not just begin after Christ was crucified for us. The apostle says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).
