Gregory the Monk

Who he was

Of Persian descent, he became a monk after seeing a vision.
He was a student in the School of Edessa.
He spent a short period of his life in Cyprus.
Most of his letters were addressed to two of his friends, St. Epiphanius and Theodorus, who were either monks or abbots of monasteries.
Only a few of these letters are extant and it is suggested they were originally chapters in a book about monastic life.

He wrote 10 treatises: 1. To the Monks Warning them about the Machinations of the Devils; 2. On the Emotions of the Soul; 3. Encouraging the Monks; 4. On the Monastic Life; 5. On the Power of God; 6. Exhortation to the Abbots; 7. On Divine Revelation and Contemplations; 8. On Visiting Monks; 9. Questions and Answers on the Practice of Virtues Addressed to St. Epiphanius and Theodorus; and 10. Answers to the Questions of the Monks on the Divine Economy. 10
