Who he was
- He was one of the first to side with Nestorius.
- The Council of Ephesus (431) excommunicated him without being able to silence him.
- He warned John of Antioch against negotiations for a union with St. Cyril of Alexandria and the Oriental bishops.
- He called John of Antioch “Judas” when he made peace with St. Cyril in 433, and broke decisivelywith him.
- He was deposed in 434 and exiled to Scythopolis in Palestine, finally to Tyre in Phoenicia.
- The date of his death is unknown.
What he wrote
- His Refutations of Various Propositions composed ca. 432 are against St. Cyril’s Christology, in defense of Antiochian dyophysitism. He criticized mainly the propositions with the one person in Christ and the Communicato idiomatum.
- Five letters are preserved in a poor Latin
translation. In the first he refuted the views of St. Cyril and his friends.
- One letter is addressed to Pope Sixtus III.
