What is the purpose of the water font situated in the western part of the nave?

This is a covered font embedded in the ground, made of marble or stone, and is used in the Liturgy of the Water (Lakkan prayer) on Covenant Thursday, the Feast of Epiphany, and the Apostles Feast.
