How do the Hypostatic characteristics constitute the divine essence?

Hypostatic characteristics reveal the relationship between the three Hypostases —that there is no separation between any one and the other two — while at the same time clearly distinguishing each Hypostasis. It cannot be said that the Father is a Son or a Holy Spirit, etc. That would be to fall into Sabellianism, the heresy of Sabellius, which claimed that God the Father Himself appeared by taking the form of the Son to perform the work of salvation, and takes the form of the Holy Spirit in the performance of baptism. In Sabellius’ view, the three Hypostases are nothing more than three modes of appearance of a single Hypostasis.

In saying that there are three Hypostases in one essence, we are certainly not saying that each Hypostasis is one part, which, put together with the other parts, makes up the one divine essence. Each Hypostasis is complete in itself — not a part of an essence — and inseparable from the other two distinct Hypostases.
