This protects the faithful from straying into idolatry. St. Cyril the Great says, “Therefore for the destruction of the error of polytheism they name one God following in every way the Holy Scriptures and showing the beauty of the truth to all men throughout the whole world under the sun. The all-wise Moses did this also saying most clearly, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord your God is one Lord’ (Deut. 6:4; see also Ex. 20:3; Isa. 44:6).”292
